(2) Is the book autobiographical?
I've been asked this repeatedly. In fact, a couple of people have
informed me, without asking, that it is an autobiography, or a
confession. Here is my answer:
Well, yes and no.
Because of the kind of person I am, I don't think I could create a
central character different from me. Not an authentic one. So
Christopher Stone is like me – we share about ninety per cent of
whatever it is that makes us who we are – and it's true that our
lives have sometimes overlapped. Whenever it would help, I
gave him what I could from my own life.
But if I should one day write an autobiography and you should
read it (and if you should believe it - truth, as they say, is often
stranger than fiction), you'll find my story different from Chris
Stone's. If that book is ever written, you can decide then how
much of Christopher Stone is Alan Conrad.
